Jersey Boys at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre

If you missed the recent media blitz, here's another gentle reminder.

The massive Broadway hit has toured the world and will finally reach our shores later this year, with a 14-week run at the MBS from 20 November 2012 to 17 February 2013.

I haven't come across a formal local press release about the cast, but here's something I found from a blog about the South African run.

It appears the same cast will perform here.

Jersey Boys is very dear to my heart. It was the very first Broadway musical I ever saw, at the ripe old age of 32, and I had the good fortune to catch the original Tony Award-winning cast just a few weeks before lead actor, John Lloyd Young (JLY), completed his contract.

My October 2007 blog review is at this link. ( Please scroll down. )

It was AWESOME! :)

Like many friends who've seen either the Broadway or other versions in the U.S. and U.K., our main concern is the cast, especially the actor who's playing Frankie Valli.

It is an extremely challenging role, mostly because of the vocal acrobatics involved. Valli's voice is unique and capable of the most amazing technical feats. JLY performed 8 shows a week and was flawless the night I watched him. It takes an incredible amount of stamina to carry this off. Not to mention the showmanship and charisma required to be larger than life despite playing a physically diminutive character.

I'm keen to buy tickets for the MBS show, and if I do, my cousin's teenage daughters will come along. Jersey Boys is suitable for anyone who loves beautiful music, great dance numbers and a fun evening out. However, the seating capacity of the MBS Theatre is considerably larger than a Broadway venue's, which may compromise the intimacy factor somewhat. Still, this may not be an issue if you're able to sit close to the stage.

To whet your appetite further, here's a YouTube clip of the Broadway cast's performance at the 2006 Tony Awards. Yes, that's JLY!

Ticket prices are reasonable. Go for it! :)
